Lake Texoma: "Striper fishing capital of the world"

Known simply as Texoma, is situated on the Red River between Oklahoma and Texas. Attracting approximately 6 million visitors a year, Lake Texoma's popularity is largely attributed to its sheer size as well as its proximity to the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex, about an hour's drive south of the lake. This lake is known as the 'Striper Fishing Capital of the World', is popular for many other activities and recreational sports as well.

Sailing:

You will find that sailing in Texoma can be challenging during the Fall and Winter months and really enjoyable in the Spring. We recommend staying away from the lake during the summer due to no wind and extremely hot conditions. There are many clubs and marinas surrounding the lake, the most sailing-oriented ones are: Grand Pappy near the dam (east end) and Cedar Mills Marina (West end). Sailing from one to the other can take you between 3 1/2 hours to 5 hours depending on the boat and wind conditions.Starting on the East End, come out of Grand Pappy and turn right towards the dam, not the right direction but worth the detour. Once you get near the dam, hoist the kite and sail for 2 hours until you get to the "cliffs" near the coast of Oklahoma. From that point head almost upwind towards the "islands", the narrowest part of the lake. Up to this point you have been passing several coves where you can spend the night if you decided to.The last part of the cruise, will take you up again towards Oklahoma until the final turn South through the passage and one last righty into Cedar Mills Marina.

Cruising or Racing:

You can do both in Texoma, we had just heard that the newly formed Sail Texoma Association and the Pelican Landing Yacht Club are putting together a racing program for these coming seasons as well as planning a couple of cruising rendezvous on the lake.
