Calypso Instruments: A new way to measure wind

Calypso

Written by Matthew Burns, Tech Specialist at MAURIPRO Sailing.

New Tecnology for Anemometers

Calypso Instruments has developed a new range of ultrasonic anemometers that can measure wind speed using sound waves. Each wind meter has 4 internal sensors pinging each other, measuring the sound waves' time of flight to determine the wind's direction and speed without using any moving parts, like regular wind vanes.

Range of Products

At the moment, Calypso offers 3 wind meters: Mini, Portable, and the Ultra Low Powered (ULP).

MINI:
The mini is the smallest one, measuring 43 mm. in diameter (1 11/16”), working with a 150 hours rechargeable battery, and includes a 6 mm. (¼”) thread allowing it to be mounted to any GoPro Mount. It is ideal for dinghies and keelboats because of its lightweight.

PORTABLE:
The Portable is a little bigger, with a diameter of 70 mm. (2 ¾”), but includes a solar panel that allows it to be charged internally. At full charge, it has 29 days of operational life. For mounting, it has an M16X2 thread that works with the mast mount or poles that Calypso offers. This one is a permanent option designed for midrange to big boats. Both Mini and Portable can be connected to your phone using Bluetooth or your Chartplotter or Sailing displays using an NMEA gateway for 183, 2000, or Wifi connection.

ULTRA LOW-POWER-ULTRASONIC:
The ULP has to be connected to a ship's 12V supply using its wire and has an NMEA 183 vast output to be connected directly with any Chartplotter or to the Gateways for other connections, such as NMEA 2000 or Wifi. Design for permanent installation on cruise or race boats.

Connectivity

It can be connected to any Wind display that works with NMEA 183, 2000, or Wifi. Calypso offers gateways for each configuration. They receive the information via Bluetooth from the sensors (or wire, in the case of the ULP ) and transform it into each communication system.

Anemotracker App

Calypso Instruments has developed a free app to connect your equipment with mobile devices. It works with the Mini and Portable Series. This app is available for Android (Google Play) and IOS (App Store) operating systems.

Variables you can check in your display:

  • Apparent Wind Angle (AWA)
  • Real Wind Angle (TWA)
  • Apparent Wind Speed (AWS)
  • Real Wind Speed (TWS)

Tracking option - Log your navigation and export it to your PC.

Look at our explicative video to better understand how the application is connected to the wind sensor!
