Overview

MISTRAL Bow Paddle

Three important reasons for consideration by advanced and professional SUP riders.

1) When using a ‘conventional’ single bend shaft, the (lower) stroke hand, will only transfer power from the lower arm to the index and middle finger at the catch phase of the stroke. Consequently, when the paddle touches the water the rider loses driving power. When using a bow shaft, the stroke hand will transfer greater power to the arm through all fingers (the whole hand). This ensures the rider will not lose driving power during the stroke.

2) Upper pressure. Unlike a conventional single bend shaft, the reverse angle of the shaft of the bow paddle, gives the rider greater paddle power potential because the upper hand is not so close to their body while paddling. This means greater force can be delivered when paddling and deeper strokes taken.

3) Forward blade entry and exit range. Because the blade can be placed further toward the nose of the board, the resulting angle of the blade, assists avoidance of one of the biggest errors in SUP, namely pulling+ the blade beyond the level of the hip.

Adjustable Paddles

This versatile paddle is offered in both full carbon and a fiberglass version. The latter is now strengthened with carbon composite. In the full carbon version, the blade is also carbon. The blade on the fiberglass version is constructed from polypropylene with fiberglass armouring. Both feather light blades have high impact strength and will not damage the rails of your board.

Oval-Shaft

The single piece paddles from Mistral are generally equipped with an oval shaft. This increases shaft stiffness and has the advantage
of ensuring you maintain the blade in the correct position relative to the board. In contrast to an oval shaft, a round shaft paddle can slip off-axis within the hand.

The dihedral-blade

A blade has two important surfaces. The back of the blade is the low-pressure side facing away from the paddler, the front of the blade is the side which pressures the water and against which the paddler pulls. A dihedral is a slightly raised ridge originating at the neck of the blade, gently leveling off toward the mid-section. During the paddle stroke, this encourages water to exit the edges evenly, so it remains ‘balanced’ while completely flat paddles can have a tendency to oscillate (flutter) left and right.

The Classic Full Carbon Blade

The classic Mistral Full Carbon Paddle features a slightly rounded
back blade face, especially beneficial for stand up paddle surfing
since this shape will cut through the waves easily.

Mistral tested many different shapes and have decided upon 2 basic versions. The beautifully wedge shaped round grip, which adapts
to any hand size and the T-grip for smaller hands. There is also an option for an EVA grip with a softer feel.
