Harken Winches Overview

Harken Standard and Self Tailing Winches

harken self tailing winchesHarken® winches are designed to be reliable, rugged, and efficient. They feature more bearings than comparable winches and have wide-diameter spindles to decrease bearing loads for reduced friction.

The self-tailing arm is adjustable to 22 positions after the winch is mounted. Line entry is low and close to the drum. The one-piece sculpted, chrome-plated line guide with integrated line peeler is easy to install.

Before you ordering you need exact
rig dimensions.

1. Stainless Steel Roller Bearings. 17-4 PH stainless steel roller bearings ride in high-strength plastic cages. These cages offer a natural lubricity that reduces friction, requires less maintenance, and eliminates corrosion between the roller bearings and the cage. The large diameter of the centerstem allows room for more bearings. This decreases the load on each bearing to create a more efficient winch. Stainless steel ball bearings at the base of the center of the stem carry the vertical load.

2. Center Shaft Roller Bearings.
Center Shafts on winches as small as the 32 ride on roller bearings.

3. Four Pawls.
Exclusive in Harken winches from the 42 feature four pawls to maximize reliability and minimize backlash. Pawls are held captive by the springs. They are easy to remove but won´t drop out accidentally during service.

4. Large Drain Holes. All bases feature large drain holes.

5. High-Load Gears. Load-carrying gears on winches as small as the 32 are 17-4 PH stainless for strength, durability, and efficiency. Larger winches use two gears to drive drums. This reduces the load on the drum gear and loads the drum symmetrically, which improves efficiency.

6. Roller Bearings in Every Gear. Winches as small as the 48 feature roller bearings in every gear. Load carrying gear pins are 17-4 PH stainless steel for maximum strength and durability.

Harken Racing Winches

Racing Features

harken racing winchesRacers at all levels know that light boats are faster. Leading-edge boats are designed and built to exacting standards to keep weight down. These boats demand extremely light winches with high efficiency and total reliability.

Harken® answers these needs with a line of racing winches that combine the meticulous attention to detail of the best italian craftsmen with the space-age American technology that has made Harken® an institution in racing circles for over 20 years.

Harken's® racing winches are the ultimate winches for serious racing boats. Weights are extremely low, and reliability and efficiency are extremely high. Racing winches are not simply standard winches modified for lighter weights. From the hard anodized alloy bodies and drums and the PEEK® roller bearings riding in large-diameter cages, to the Torlon® balls carrying vertical loads on the drum, and the 17-4 PH gear and gear pins, Harken® racing winches are engineered for performance.

From small two-speed self-tailers to enormous wide body pedestal-driven winches, Harken® offers the most complete range of racing winches available. They meet every need on any racing boat.

1. PEEK® Roller Bearings. PEEK® roller bearings ride in large diameter cages to allow more bearings to carry the load. PEEK® roller bearings are 30% lighter than stainless steel. Large-diameter spindles form a large bearing surface properly carry the load.

2. More Ball Bearings. More bearings than any other winch. Ball bearings carry the vertical load of the drum for greater efficiency.

3. Four Pawls. Gears on winches from the 45 feature four pawls for maximum reliability and minimal backlash. Pawls are held captive by the springs. They are easy to remove but won't drop out accidentally during service.

4. Center Shaft Bearings. Center shafts on all racing winches ride on high-efficiency bearings.

5. Stainless Steel Drive Gears. Drive gears are 17-4 PH stainless steel with specially finished working surface.

6. Lightweight, High-Strength Components. Housings are machined from sold aluminum. Gears are 17-4 PH stainless steel for maximum strength. Lightening holes provide weight saving.

7. Low Line Entry. The extremely low line entry improves aerodynamics by keeping lines close to the deck.
