About Tartan 37 Sailboat
The Tartan 37 began as Sparkman & Stephens design #2253. The original preliminary sketches show racing version with a 50' I dimension, and a cruising sloop with a 47' I dimension. A ketch was also considered but not produced. Finally, the name for design #2253 was narrowed to T38 for the racing version, and T37 for the cruising version. The first few hulls out of the mold were built as the racing version or Tartan 38, with a deep fin keel and tall rig. The racing success for these boats was not as good as S&S Staff had desired, but the cruising aspects of the boat were very marketable. The line continued and all boats were produced as the Tartan 37, whether they had the deep keel and tall rig or the keel/centerboard and standard rig. Some boats were produced in the K/CB configuration but with the tall rig. The excellent sailing manners, pleasing lines and rich interior joiner work of the Tartan 37 have become Tartan trademarks. The new line of Tartans being built by Fairport Harbor Marine still bear much of the look of the Tartan 37, and carry on the quality and performance the Tartan name has come to signify.
