J70: Fast and Fun Sailing for Everyone

The J70 introduces a new dimension of fun, fast sailing in a stable, easy to own boat. The J70's 22-foot long waterline with high aspect, all carbon rig and deep, lifting bulb keel provides spirited performance and good stability. The J70 is designed to fulfill the needs of a diverse range of sailors—from performance one-design and club racers, to sailing families. The large cockpit comfortably holds three adults or four mixed crew, and the vertical lifting keel makes trailering and launching the J70 a snap.

Knifing through the water upwind with confidence and ease, the J70 has that legendary “J” feel - light, controllable with a wide-groove to sail consistently fast. With an adjustable cascading backstay, one has total control over sail shape and dynamic rig tension across the full range of conditions, making it easy to change gears on the J70.

Since its launch in 2012, the popularity of the J70 has soared, with growing fleets and regatta action worldwide. Superbly built by CCF Composites, Bristol, R. I., the J70 was named 2013 Boat of the Year by Sailing World Magazine.

At Mauri Pro we have a range of parts, running rigging, sailing gear, and accessories that will help keep your J70 in top racing condition.

Backstay System

J70 Backstay Bridle

The soft backstay used by the J70 allows for minimal weight aloft. The backstay uses 6mm dyneema single braid spliced onto a low friction ring. The backstay bridle is also a 6mm dyneema line with a sling splice and ball. This allows the backstay to be adjusted in varying wind conditions. As the wind increases, the bridle should be tensioned to remove any excess slack. The backstay is controlled using a triple configuration of Harken 29mm T2 Blocks, all tied together. The line is led to the deck through a 29mm fixed block and through a 29mm cheek block. The control line terminates through a micro cam cleat with fairlead.

J70 Traveler System

The traveler system on the J70 uses a high beam 22mm traveler track. The traveler line runs through 2 fixed 29mm carbo blocks and terminates through a micro cam cleat with fairlead. This creates a simple 2:1 purchase for the driver. We recommend using a light 5mm continuous line such as FSE Dinghy Control to make breaking the leeward cleat easier.

J70 Mainsheet System

The J70 class rules allow a minimum mainsheet purchase of 4:1 and a maximum of 6:1. We recommend using a system that will allow you to adjust from a 6:1 purchase to a 5:1 purchase on the water. Use the 5:1 purchase in light air and switch to the 6:1 purchase when the breeze comes on. We recommend using a tapered 8mm line such as Samson MLX for your J70 mainsheet.

J70 Jib Sheet System

Jib trim on the J70 is one of the most critical tasks while sailing upwind. J70 class rules permit the addition of an extra cleat facing outboard on each side, which will allow you to adjust jib trim from the rail. We recommend using risers under the cleat for optimum angle. The jib sheet is rigged as a 2:1 purchase using 40mm blocks, which allows controlled sheeting of the jib in a wide range.

Jib Fine Tune

J70 Jib Halyard Fine Tune

The Jib Halyard Fine Tune on a J70 adds a crucial element to your upwind settings. The system uses a 4:1 purchase led through a swivel cleat attached to the mast. With this system, the luff tension on your J70 Jib can be adjusted quickly through the puffs. Set your halyard at the minimum setting for the lulls. As the breeze increases in the puffs, add tension to the luff to help bring the draft forward in the sail, as well as give you a better angle of attack against the wind. The ability to constantly change gears will give you the edge you need to excel in the J70.
