Sailboat Line Glossary

Amsteel Blue (Samson): one of the first and most notorious single braid / 12-strand Dyneema lines in the industry. I widely used on high load applications such as running backstays, headstay tensioners, vang strops, racing lifelines, where the line needs to be left exposed to UV and weather elements. Light and non water absorbent. Best replacement for wire ropes on board. ...more
Type of splice: single braid eye splice.

Apex (Samson): a trademark of Samson ropes, the Apex offers great feeling "in the hand" with low stretch and floatability due to its blend of Dyneema SK75 / MFP blend. Ideal for mainsheets and control lines....more
Type of splice: 12 strand eye splice/ lock stitch.

Crystalline (Yale): a double braid line with a 24 plait polyester cover and a 12 strands Vectran core that offers the lowest stretch and no creep. The current treatment of each Vectran fiber also assures UV stability. Ideal for Genoa halyard, mainsail halyard, spinnaker guys. Can be stripped and tapered. ...more
Type of splice: core to core.

DSK 75 PC (Maffioli): it is a unique line that offers all the benefits of the Dyneema SK75 through it's core and a "spun" feeling with its PC cover. Great in the hands, great on the winches. We have used this line for Admiral's Cup mainsheet systems, Genoa sheets, Spinnaker guys and other high load applications. Great feeling and holding power even if it gets soaked in water. Can be stripped and tapered. ...more
Type of splice: core to core.

Endura 12 (New England Ropes): a 100% Dyneema SK75 single braid 12 strand line. Excellent for running backstays, vang strops, spinnaker sheet strops, outhaul wire replacements, even halyards on small boats and on larges boats if a jacket is added. Endura 12 is very light and offers very low friction through sheaves and ferrules. Can be exposed to weather and has very small "flat" effect when working under high loads....more
Type of splice: single braid eye splice.

Endura Braid (New England Ropes): one of the most popular double braided Dyneema SK75 ropes on the market. Excellent for Spinnaker halyards and Spinnaker and jib sheets on mid size and big racing sailboats. Endura Braid has performed extremely well when tapered and exposed to UV, moisture and dry environment. We really like this line for high load applications where the elements test the strength and durability of the fibers. Non water absorbent and floats. ...more

Finish Line (New England Ropes): 8-plait 100% pre-stretched polyester with a continuous filament core. It's the tradional dinghy line, over excellent grip, low stretch and relative stiffness useful in some applications such as windsurf and catamaran downhauls, outhauls and trapeze lines. It is not sliceable. ...more

Flight Line (New England Ropes): the best of both worlds: light weight and strength combined through a Dyneema core wand polypropylene cover allowing the line to float, not absorb water and hold high loads. Flight Line works as excellent light and medium air spinnaker sheets on big boats and all around spinnaker sheets on small and mid size keel boats. Can be stripped and tapered for even more weight and friction savings. ...more
Type of splice: core to core eye splice.

Newswift (Maffioli): an excellent double braid with a blended core of Dyneema SK75 and polypropylene and a cover of Dyneema SK75 and non-slip fiber. Great options for sheets and control lines on small and mid size keel boats as well as dinghies. It has also proven to be a very good option for furling lines on Code Zero and full hoist racing headsails that use continuous line furlers. ...more

Salsa (New England Ropes): another great option for mainsheets and control lines on small and mid-size keelboats where the application involves a lot of "playing" of the rope. Salsa line is a single braid blend of spun polyester and Dyneema SK75. ...more
Type of splice: 12 strand eye splice / lock stitch (only recommended for low load applications).

Spyderline (New England Ropes): one of the best options for performance dinghies and beachcat sailors. Double braid Polyester cover / Dyneema SK75 core makes it great option for high load applications on small boats such as halyards and control lines where low stretch is required. Available in 1.8mm up to 4.8mm is a "very strong little line". Lines over 1.8 mm have a sliceable core. ...more
Type of splice: core to core.

Sta-Set (New England Ropes): the most popular "all around" rope. A double braid polyester, Sta-Set offers long service life and strength against the elements and that is why you will find it on almost every Club Racing and cruising keelboat, on application such as sheets and control lines. ...more
Type of splice: double braid eye splice.

Swiftcord (Maffioli): another unique product from the Italian rope manufacturer. Single braid blend of Dyneema SK75 and non-slip fiber makes it the lightest and best "in the hand" rope available for mainsheet on small keelboats and dinghies, light air spinnaker sheets and control lines. ...more

V-100 (New England Ropes): double braid line, cored with a 12 strands Vectran and covered with a 24 carrier polyester sleeve. Offers excellent abrasion and UV resistance. Our team has tested on the race course and has proved to a extremely strong and non elongating line. Ideal for Genoa halyard, mainsail halyard, spinnaker guys. Can be stripped and tapered. ...more
Type of splice: core to core eye splice.

VPC (New England Ropes): we are liking this rope since it was launched by our friends at New England Ropes. The VPC is a blend of Vectran and polyester double braid that offers low stretch, great grip, excellent durability at a very reasonable price. It is an excellent choice for sheets and control lines on small and mid-size club racing sailboats as well as halyards for cruisers that want to take their running rigging one step above the traditional double braid polyester. ...more
Type of splice: double braid eye splice.

Warpspeed (Samson): on of the greatest double braid Dyneema SK 75 lines in the market. It is the most flexible dyneema rope available, so you don't have to limit it's use to halyards since it can be used on sheets and control line where low stretch is needed. It's tan cover color makes it very easy to be differentiated from the rest of the lines on your deck and rig. Can be stripped. ...more
Type of splice: core to core.
