Cruising with a Folding Wheel

Cruising the Northern Huron and the Georgian Bay

Hi Rod,

lewmar folding wheelWe just returned from our (nearly) month long trip to Northern Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. The new wheel was the hit of the trip, my wife loved it, my son loved it, and all our sailing buddies did as well.

In any event, I want to again thank you for your efforts on my behalf. We appreciated the wheel at anchor and while underway. But it was most appreciated the night we crossed Lake Huron, Bay City to Tobermory is 160 miles and for us is a 24-30 hour trip. It was very nasty, 25-30 knots, 6-8 foot waves very close together, on a broad reach. Hand steering was necessary most of the time because the auto pilot had trouble with the big following waves. With our old wheel it would have required standing all the time, and wrestling with the steering.

northern huron, georgian bayWith the new wheel we can sit on the combing or on the stern perch seats and it is so much easier to steer. We said thanks more than once that night.

In addition, the wheel just looks really cool on our boat. I have attached two pictures; the first is my 15 year old son and I on a pleasant morning, wheel in evidence. The second picture is the spot we were headed to that day, a little cove we discovered a few years back, well off the beaten track. We are anchored and tied off to shore, (as are our friends who we let in on the secret spot) in true North Channel style. North Channel cruising at its' best.

Note:
I passed along your URL to at least 5 different sailors so who know, maybe you guys will get some more business.

Best,

Eric Vahlbusch
